21. Sleep

Wilson returned weighed down with food and other supplies. He spent the first part of the evening preparing beds for both Raven and Mia and setting up one of the couches in the lounge room for himself to sleep on. He insisted on taking the couch, allowing the women to use a single bed and mattress set up in the bedroom.

“What’s the plan for tomorrow?” Raven asked, holding a glass of water while Mia shuffled into the bedroom and Wilson began settling down for the night.

“I was thinking you might like to see the visitor’s hall at the Mount,” Wilson replied. “It’s the closest we’ll be able to get to the peak and it does provide a view of the upper precinct where Meric and various officials will be meeting.”

Raven nodded. “So, we’re just calling him Meric then? Not Illkaar?”

“Oh, I can do either if you prefer. I was just—”

“It’s fine, Wilson,” she replied with a grin. “Meric is fine. I’m off to bed, I’ll see you in the morning.”

He nodded, sitting uncomfortably on the couch and not yet ready to lay down in case she needed him again. As Raven moved to the bedroom she reflected on what a bizarre dynamic there was between them. They had met only a few hours ago and were now effectively planning an assassination. Worse, he was working for the enemy, whether he realized it or not.

When she headed into the bedroom and closed the door she found Mia lying on the mattress Wilson had set up on the floor. She was staring up at the ceiling.

“I can still feel him,” she said. “Back in the other world.”

“Chip?” Raven asked, slipping into bed.

“Yeah. It’s weak, but I can still feel the connection to him. That’s something at least. Makes me feel like it’s not all bad.”

Raven nodded, laying back against her pillow and reflecting that it still felt pretty bad from her perspective. Mia sighed.

“What are we gonna do, Raven? We can’t just go killing this guy, can we?”

“Might not have an option. Can you talk to Chip, ask him to find the others?”

“Not yet. I’ll keep trying to reach him though. Even if we find them, what can we do from here?”

“I’m still working on that one. For now, let’s just try to get some sleep.”

“Yeah, right. How the hell am I supposed to manage that with everything that’s going on?”

“You’ve got magic, don’t you? Isn’t there some Fae trick that can help you get to sleep?”

Mia raised her arms, scanning the lines of Fae markings tattooed to the skin. “Probably half a dozen ways, but I don’t know any of them. I could try a sprite, I guess. You remember Simsim?”

“Of course,” Raven responded, an image of the blue skinned nymph coming to her mind. The Fae hadn’t survived the events of the Fae uprising and consequent emergence of the Midnight Guard. While Raven had never been close to the woman, Caleb had taken it hard.

“Well, I met a cousin of hers named Sullansim.
